Stroller’s story
When we bought Stroller in 1988 as a six year old, he’d already had an illustrious showing career. As a yearling, for example, he was Best Colt at the Breed Show 1982, and in 1987 he was Supreme Champion of Breed at the Three Counties. This was not, however, why we bought him. For me, showing is a means of ensuring breeders produce quality horses that are ‘fit for purpose’; it is the purpose that interests me, and Haflingers are designed to be the perfect all-rounders!
At the time, I was a pony-mad teenager, keen to try as many equestrian disciplines as possible and, in Haffy, I found a willing and intelligent accomplice. We competed with great success in dressage, show-jumping, cross-country and working hunter. When we took up western riding and trail classes, Haffy easily held his own against the Quarter Horses, many of whom competed on the international circuit.
Meanwhile, Mum and Haffy found great success in the driving arena, travelling from Cornwall to the Black Mountains, via Windsor Great Park! Their greatest triumph came in 1996 at the Carriage House Driven Dressage to Music national championships, where they were reserve champions.
Wichenford Stroller was certainly a pretty face but he was so much more than that. In his lifetime, he filled our lives with fun and our trophy cabinet with silverware in a way that no other horse has done before or since. Happiness really was a Haflinger, and his is sadly missed.
